A Stress-Free Thanksgiving Starts With Your Plumbing

Blog

Many stressful Thanksgiving holidays are created by problems with the plumbing in a home. This is because many poor habits are made worse by the business of the holiday. Here's what you can do to prevent this to help take the right step towards a stress-free Thanksgiving this year:

Remember, the Garage Disposal is Not a Trash Can:

First off, remember that the garbage disposal is not a trash can. You might wipe and clean your plate before putting your dishes in the sink, but do your guests? Many people do not have this habit and this could be why too many food scraps get washed down into your garbage disposal causing all sorts of problems. Keep your trash can accessible to guests and visible near the sink, and be sure to remind your guests to wipe their plates clean in the trash before putting their dishes in the sink, or have them pile their dishes on the counter instead of in the sink for you to wash later.

Keep a Trash Can Visible in the Bathroom:

Before having guests over for the holidays, be sure that you have a trash can visible, preferably right next to the toilet. This way, guests have a way of disposing anything that should not be flushed down the toilet. This includes feminine products, tissues, and more.

Spread Out Showers:

If you are going to have guests staying with you over the holidays, be sure to do your best to spread out showers. Try waking up earlier than your guests, give the kids a bath together if it's appropriate, or you can even consider taking a shower before going to bed if your guests are going to be showering in the morning. The reason you want to do this is to ensure that the drains have time to clear. Otherwise, too much gunk and hair could pile up causing a clog.

Get a Plumbing Inspection:

Before the Thanksgiving holiday even arrives, consider getting a plumbing inspection done. This way, if there are any current plumbing issues, you can have them fixed before you start overworking your plumbing system over the holidays. Keep in mind that many plumbers are busy dealing with emergencies over the holidays, so hiring them for an inspection and repairs right before is the best way to go.

Now that you know the first step to a stress-free Thanksgiving, you can start to focus on the joy that comes from this time spent with family and friends.
