How To Keep Your Plumbing Under Control This Holiday Season

Blog

Christmas isn't far away, which means that your house is going to soon be crowded with a number of your relatives and other guests. As you begin to prepare for the holiday gathering, you need to do more than decorate, clean, and shop. You also need to ensure that your plumbing and septic systems are up to par. Here is how to do that:

Your Bathroom

Your bathroom is going to be used quite frequently by your guests. To help encourage your guests to avoid flushing trash down the toilet, make sure that you have a small trash can ready to be used in the bathroom. There are only two things that should ever be flushed down the toilet: human waste and toilet paper.

If your home is equipped with more than one bathroom, make sure they are all open for guests to use. This will take the load off of the plumbing fixtures in the one bathroom. And don't forget to ensure that you have a plunger handy just in case a minor clog occurs.

Your Kitchen

To ensure that your garbage disposal remains in proper working order, make sure that you don't put anything in them that shouldn't be there. For example, don't stick any fibrous materials in the garbage disposal. This includes celery, corn husks, etc. You also do not want to pour grease, oils, or fats down your drains, as these can lead to clogs.

If you are ever unsure about whether you should put something in the garbage disposal, don't do it, and toss it in the garbage instead. Also, to reduce the amount of stress on the disposal, make sure to scrape any leftovers on plates into the trash. Don't forget to run cold water into the disposal for 10 to 15 seconds after each use to push down any food particles.

Your Septic

If it has been a few years since your septic system has been pumped out, you should contact a professional to schedule a pump-out before your family gathering. You do not want to have to deal with slow draining or a back-up during your Christmas gettogether.

If you are concerned about your plumbing and septic systems and want to ensure that you don't have any mishaps this holiday season, contact a plumbing company like Plumb-It Inc to come out to your home and take a look. The last thing you need or want is to have a serious plumbing catastrophe when you are supposed to be enjoying your family's company throughout the Christmas holiday.
