What's The Difference Between Septic Pumping And Cleaning?

Blog

For people who have lived with septic tanks, there's no question about the difference between septic pumping and cleaning. However, if you've recently moved into a home that has one and have never dealt with one before, you may not know what the difference is between septic pumping and septic cleaning. If you're confused by this and want to know what to expect, read on.

Pumping

Septic pumping is a procedure in which a septic or plumbing expert comes to your home to drain the tank of fluids. This is done in order to keep the septic tank at a low enough level that it doesn't overflow or cause any problems for you.

With regular septic pumping, you can prevent damage coming to the tank and prevent the pipes that drain the excess fluid into the drain field from coming off.

Cleaning

Septic cleaning is usually performed either immediately after a septic draining or as a separate service entirely. The main difference between the two procedures is that septic cleaning completely empties everything out of the tank.

With a septic tank, there is the fluid layer that floats on top, which is what septic pumping removes. However, beneath that layer, there are solids that have sunk to the bottom. This is effectively a sludge that can't be removed with septic pumping equipment. However, it can and is removed with septic cleaning. This process, like septic pumping, needs to be performed on a regular basis in order to keep the septic tank functioning properly. Otherwise, the sludge layer can rise high enough that there isn't enough space for fluid in the tank, and the drainage field pipes can become damaged or even broken by exposure to the stuff.

What to Expect

If you're not accustomed to having a septic tank, then you may not know how often these processes should be performed. Fortunately, however, you'll likely only need to have your septic tank serviced for pumping around every three years, though this number can vary depending upon the size of your tank and how many people are in your household using it on a regular basis. Likewise, septic cleaning tends to be performed around the same time, so you can often get both services performed simultaneously to save yourself time and trouble.

Remembering appointments that far in advance can be problematic, so it's a good idea to schedule an appointment with a septic company ahead of time. From there, they'll take it upon themselves to remind you of the situation when your appointment is approaching in the years to come. Contact a septic pumping service for more information.
